Chandigarh (Naval Kishore): With the monsoon season approaching, the Chandigarh Administration has intensified its preparedness measures to minimise the risk of waterlogging and civic disruptions across the city. Officials are conducting regular reviews of ongoing works, with departments instructed to complete critical infrastructure projects before the onset of heavy rainfall.
The Engineering Department, under the supervision of UT Chief Engineer C.B. Ojha, has accelerated field operations, focusing on drainage management and road infrastructure. Authorities have stressed that daily assessments are being carried out to ensure all monsoon-related works remain on schedule.
A key priority is the desilting and cleaning of major drainage channels, particularly the Patiala Ki Rao, along with extensive cleaning of roadside gullies to facilitate smooth rainwater flow. Officials believe these efforts will significantly reduce the chances of flooding in vulnerable areas during intense showers.
Alongside drainage work, road repair projects have been fast-tracked to address damaged stretches that could become hazardous during the rainy season. Civic teams are also carrying out large-scale pruning of weak and overgrown tree branches to prevent accidents caused by falling limbs during storms and high winds.
The administration has directed field officers to maintain constant supervision of all projects and submit regular progress reports, enabling swift action wherever delays or issues arise. The objective is to ensure uninterrupted public movement and minimise inconvenience to residents throughout the monsoon.
Officials maintain that a coordinated approach involving multiple departments is being adopted to strengthen Chandigarh’s preparedness, with preventive measures taking precedence over emergency response. By completing essential maintenance work in advance, the administration aims to provide a safer and more resilient urban environment during the upcoming rainy season.
