Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Canadian authorities have released photographs of 15 men facing charges in a series of extortion investigations that have raised concerns among Calgary’s South Asian community.
The Calgary Police Service (CPS) said 16 people have been charged with a total of 56 offences connected to the investigations. Police said one accused person remains in custody, while the remaining individuals have been released on bail. None of those charged are Canadian citizens.
Authorities are now appealing to members of the public for information that could help investigators establish the suspects’ movements, employment, associates and other connections.
Police seek information about suspects and associates
Jeff Bell, superintendent with the CPS Criminal Operations and Intelligence Division, said investigators are particularly interested in learning more about the people surrounding the accused.
Police want members of the public to report information about where the suspects may be living or spending time, whether they are employed and who they may be associated with.
Some of the men were reportedly known by different names within the community. Bell gave an example of a suspect whose roommate was unaware of his legal name until police identified him.
The decision to release most of the accused on bail has also attracted attention. Bell described their return to the community as “concerning”, although bail decisions are ultimately made by the courts after hearing the Crown’s position.
Nearly 50 extortion incidents recorded
The Calgary investigations form part of a much larger problem involving extortion threats against members of South Asian communities across Canada, with authorities in British Columbia and the Greater Toronto Area also investigating similar cases.
According to Calgary police, 49 extortion-related incidents have been recorded in the city since April 2025. The cases include 19 shootings.
Police said 18 of those shootings involved victims or their property, while another incident involved suspects firing at one another.
Investigators believe criminal organisations can use individuals to carry out threats and acts of violence against victims who are being pressured to hand over money.
Police operations aim to curb violence
The CPS has established two operations as part of its response.
Operation Orion is focused primarily on investigations, while Operation Outage involves increased police visibility and engagement with communities affected by the extortion problem.
Police say the measures have contributed to a reduction in violent incidents.
Bell said there were nine extortion-related shootings during the first 60 days of 2026. Over the following roughly 100 days, that figure fell to two.
He pointed to the decline as evidence that the police response was helping to reduce violence linked to the investigations.
More suspects could still be identified
Police stressed that the cases remain active and that the investigation has not ended with the latest charges.
Authorities are also looking for Germanjeet Singh, who is wanted on outstanding warrants, and are asking anyone who knows his whereabouts or has relevant information about the wider investigations to come forward.
The CPS has encouraged people with information to contact police or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
Community welcomes release of photographs
The publication of the suspects’ photographs has received a positive response from members of Calgary’s South Asian community.
Rishi Nagar, news director at South Asian radio station Red FM, described the move as a relief. He said community members had been asking authorities to release photographs because they otherwise had little way of knowing whether people they encountered were among those facing charges.
The release of the images is expected to assist investigators as they continue examining the network of people allegedly connected to the extortion cases.
Police have also warned that additional suspects may remain at large, meaning the investigation and efforts to prevent further violence are continuing.
