CALGARY (Rajeev Sharma): A Calgary police officer was shot Monday morning during a traffic stop in the southwest community of Spruce Cliff, triggering a major police operation and a dramatic pursuit through Edworthy Park.
According to information released by the Calgary Police Service, the incident began at approximately 11:45 a.m. on August 10, when officers conducting a traffic stop encountered an occupant who allegedly opened fire, striking one officer. The injured officer was transported to hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Police say the suspect then fled on foot toward Edworthy Park and the Bow River. During the ensuing operation, investigators believe the man continued firing at pursuing officers and nearby civilians. Police also believe the suspect carjacked another individual and drove through the park before the vehicle became stuck. The suspect then reportedly abandoned the vehicle and continued fleeing on foot.
The Calgary Police Service deployed its HAWCS helicopter to track the suspect and direct officers on the ground. A major portion of Edworthy Park and surrounding roads was temporarily closed as officers searched for the suspect and secured the area.
The suspect was ultimately found deceased in the Bow River before officers on the ground reached him. The Calgary Fire Department assisted with recovery operations.
Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan addressed the seriousness of the incident, with police emphasizing that this was a rapidly evolving and dangerous situation that placed both officers and members of the public at risk. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in, as required for incidents involving police use of force and officer-involved shootings. ASIRT will independently investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the suspect’s death. Police are continuing to search Edworthy Park for evidence and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or may have relevant information to come forward.
The injured officer remains in stable condition. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected as authorities release more information.
