Bhutan King Dedicates Stupa 76 To PM Narendra Modi, Recognises His Role In Strengthening Bilateral Ties

New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck has dedicated one of 108 sacred stupas to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recognising his contribution to strengthening relations between the two neighbouring countries.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who represented India at the consecration ceremony in Gelephu Mindfulness City, said Stupa 76 had been dedicated to Modi in recognition of his vision and efforts to deepen the friendship between India and Bhutan.

The consecration ceremony was held from October 31 to November 2 to mark Lhabab Duchen, an important festival in the Buddhist calendar. Rijiju, who holds the Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs portfolios, described the gesture as an honour for India.

Why Was A Stupa Dedicated To Narendra Modi?

Explaining the significance of the gesture, Rijiju said a stupa was not simply a monument but represented the enlightened mind of the Buddha.

He added that dedicating a stupa to an individual was considered highly meritorious, auspicious and spiritually significant in Buddhist tradition.

The ceremony was attended by Bhutan’s King and Queen, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and members of the public. Traditional Buddhist rituals were performed during the consecration, accompanied by the blowing of dungchens, long horns used in religious ceremonies.

Gelephu Mindfulness City Hosts Sacred Consecration Ceremony

The choice of Gelephu Mindfulness City for the event brought attention to Bhutan’s development initiative as well as its Buddhist heritage.

The dedication also highlighted the cultural and spiritual connections between India and Bhutan. Buddhism remains an important link between the two countries, with India being the birthplace of the religion and Bhutan retaining a strong Buddhist cultural tradition.

The gesture comes as both countries continue to emphasise their longstanding friendship, supported by religious, cultural and people-to-people ties.
