Batala SDM Arrested for Bribery; Vigilance Bureau Recovers ₹13.5 Lakh in Late-Night Raid

Batala, November 22 — The Punjab Vigilance Bureau arrested Batala SDM and Municipal Corporation Commissioner Vikramjeet Singh Panthey after he was allegedly caught accepting a bribe of ₹50,000 from a local contractor. A subsequent late-night search at his residence led to the recovery of ₹13.5 lakh in unaccounted cash, intensifying the case against him.

According to officials, the arrest was made following a complaint by contractor Amarpal Singh, who had completed road repair work worth ₹3.72 lakh for the municipal corporation. The SDM allegedly demanded a 10% cut from the sanctioned amount before releasing the payment. The complainant also claimed that Panthey sought another commission to clear pending dues for lighting services provided during an official function.

After verifying the allegations, the Vigilance Bureau set up a trap and apprehended Panthey in the presence of official witnesses. The cash seized from his home is now part of the ongoing investigation.

A case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered at the Vigilance Bureau police station in Amritsar. Officials said further inquiries are underway to determine if more individuals or payments are linked to the bribery network.
