Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a fatal police shooting following a domestic violence call in Edmonton’s Donsdale neighbourhood.
The Edmonton Police Service was called to a home shortly before 10 a.m. on September 13 after receiving a 911 report involving domestic violence and an active shooter.
When officers arrived, they secured the area and assisted two women and an infant who had managed to leave the residence.
According to the incident update, a man later exited the home carrying a shotgun. Police issued commands for him to drop the weapon before officers shot him. Because of the man’s proximity to the firearm, tactical officers and a police service dog were used to take him into custody.
Tactical paramedics provided emergency medical treatment at the scene, but the man died from his injuries.
A woman who was inside the home was also taken to hospital with a gunshot wound, while the infant suffered other physical injuries. Neither injury was considered life-threatening, and both were subsequently released from hospital.
Investigation Continues
ASIRT, Alberta’s independent agency responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police, continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
No additional details are being released while the investigation remains active.
