Alberta Minister Tanya Fir Heads to Ireland and UK to Expand Cultural Industry Partnerships

EDMONTON (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta is looking to strengthen its international presence in the creative sector as Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women Tanya Fir prepares for a nine-day mission across Ireland, Scotland and England.

Fir will lead an Alberta delegation from Oct. 4 to 13, meeting with representatives from the film, television, music and arts industries as well as organizations focused on women’s leadership and political participation.

The overseas mission is aimed at creating new connections for Alberta’s cultural industries while giving the province an opportunity to promote itself as a competitive location for film, television and music production.

Officials say the meetings will also provide an opportunity to exchange ideas with international partners, explore successful approaches to developing cultural sectors and discuss common priorities.

A key component of the visit will be examining initiatives that support women in leadership and elected positions. The government says stronger international relationships could help Alberta attract new creative projects, investment and business opportunities.

“Alberta’s cultural industries create jobs, diversify our economy and drive growth across the province,” Fir said. She added that the trip will focus on strengthening international relationships, encouraging collaboration and promoting Alberta as a destination for artists, entrepreneurs and innovators.

Minister’s schedule

Fir’s itinerary begins with travel to Dublin on Oct. 4. The following day will include meetings and a tour involving industry representatives, followed by a cultural event on Oct. 6.

On Oct. 7, Fir is scheduled to meet with Women for Election Ireland, an organization focused on increasing women’s participation in politics.

Further industry meetings, tours and networking activities are planned for Oct. 8 before the delegation travels to Edinburgh, Scotland.

The minister will continue meeting with industry stakeholders in Edinburgh on Oct. 9. She will then travel to London on Oct. 10.

After a scheduled rest day on Oct. 11, Fir is expected to take part in additional meetings, sessions and industry tours in London on Oct. 12 and 13 before returning to Alberta.

The itinerary remains subject to change.

The Alberta government said expenses related to the mission will be made public through its travel and expense disclosure process.
