Alberta Legislature to Hold Public Remembrance Ceremony on November 4

Alberta Opens Student Aid Applications, Commits Over $1 Billion to Higher Education Support

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): The Alberta Legislature will host a public Service of Remembrance on November 4, bringing together elected representatives, veterans, serving military personnel and members of the public to honour Canadians who have made sacrifices in service to their country.

The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. in the rotunda of the Alberta Legislature Building, with Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Ric McIver serving as host.

McIver said the annual observance provides an opportunity to remember those who served Canada during wars, conflicts and peacetime, while also acknowledging the dedication of people currently serving in uniform.

This year’s gathering will carry particular significance following the deaths of four Canadian Armed Forces members during a training exercise at CFB Wainwright earlier this fall. The Speaker described the tragedy as a reminder of the risks faced by those who respond to their country’s call to duty.

Premier and Opposition Leader to attend

The programme will include a blessing by Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack, followed by addresses from Speaker McIver, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, Opposition Leader Naheed K. Nenshi and Indigenous Relations Minister Rajan Sawhney.

Participants will take part in the traditional Act of Remembrance, observe a moment of silence and lay wreaths in tribute to those who served and lost their lives.

Musical elements will form an important part of the ceremony, with performances of The Last Post, The Rouse and I Vow to Thee, My Country.

Public invited to attend or watch online

The Legislative Assembly has invited members of the public, serving military personnel and veterans to join the event. Edmonton Police Service veterans are also among those specifically welcomed to attend.

People unable to be present at the Legislature can follow the ceremony through a live stream on the Legislative Assembly of Alberta’s official website and its X, Facebook and YouTube channels.

The event is intended to provide an opportunity for Albertans to pay tribute to military service, reflect on the sacrifices made across generations and recognise those who continue to serve Canada.
