Alberta Records 3.3% Economic Growth in 2025, Highest GDP Per Capita in Canada: Finance Minister

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s economy expanded by 3.3 per cent in 2025, significantly exceeding Canada’s national growth rate of 1.9 per cent, according to newly released Statistics Canada figures highlighted by provincial Finance Minister Jason Nixon.

In a statement issued on November 6, Nixon said the latest gross domestic product (GDP) data showed Alberta recording the strongest economic growth among the Prairie provinces. The province also outperformed Canada’s three other largest provincial economies — British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.

Alberta further recorded the country’s highest GDP per capita in 2025, generating approximately 20 per cent more economic output per person than the national average, the minister said.

Province reports four consecutive years of above-national growth

Nixon attributed the province’s economic performance to decisions made under Premier Danielle Smith’s government, stating that Alberta’s GDP had grown faster than the national average for four consecutive years.

He pointed to trade activity, increased home construction and investments in major infrastructure projects as factors supporting economic expansion during 2025.

According to the minister, the province’s economic performance reflects efforts to support businesses, encourage investment and maintain growth across different sectors.

Alberta expects further growth in 2026

The provincial government expects Alberta’s economy to continue expanding at a faster pace than the national economy in 2026.

Nixon said the government intends to maintain competitive tax rates, advance major projects and provide businesses with conditions that encourage investment and expansion.

The latest figures place Alberta’s economic performance in focus as the province looks to sustain growth and strengthen its contribution to Canada’s overall economy.
