Alberta Unveils New Official Licence Plate After More Than 40 Years, Featuring Moraine Lake

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta is set to introduce a new official vehicle licence plate for the first time in more than four decades, with the redesigned version featuring the iconic Moraine Lake and the motto “Strong and Free.”

The new plates will be available to motorists across the province starting November 9, when residents can visit their local registry offices to obtain them.

The design centres on the theme “Strong and Free,” highlighting Alberta’s distinctive identity, economic strength and strong sense of provincial pride. It also draws inspiration from Alberta’s Latin motto while reflecting the words of Canada’s national anthem.

Announcing the launch, Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, said the new design would give residents an opportunity to showcase their connection to the province.

Nally said Albertans had selected Moraine Lake as the image for the new plate, describing it as a representation of the province’s spirit and identity. He added that motorists could proudly display the design while travelling within Alberta or elsewhere in the country.

Residents wishing to switch from their existing licence plates before their next registration renewal will have to pay a $20 government fee along with a $15 service charge to the registry agent.

Alternatively, motorists can receive the new plate when renewing their vehicle registration, paying the applicable renewal fees and a $15 registry service charge.

However, replacing the existing plate is not compulsory. Drivers can continue using their current licence plates even after the new design becomes available, provided the plates remain in good condition.
