At Just 20, Punjabi-Origin Suhana Gill Scripts History in Canada, Takes Seat on Surrey City Council

Surrey, Canada (Richa Walia): Breaking into politics at a young age, Suhana Gill, a 20-year-old woman of Punjabi origin, has achieved a major milestone by becoming the youngest person ever elected as a city councillor in Surrey, British Columbia.

Gill formally assumed office on November 2 after taking the oath as a member of the newly elected municipal council under Mayor Doug McCallum.

Her achievement reflects an unconventional academic and professional journey. Raised in Surrey, Gill completed her school education at 15 and subsequently pursued political science at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU). She graduated with a bachelor’s degree when she was just 19.

Her association with public affairs began well before her entry into electoral politics. Over the years, she became involved in youth-related initiatives, community programmes and advocacy work, gradually building her presence in local civic circles.

Gill has also gained exposure to national-level public affairs through her work with the House of Commons and participation in CBC News panels. Her experience in the non-profit sector further contributed to her understanding of community issues.

She also brings experience from the real estate industry, where she encountered concerns surrounding rising property costs and the difficulties faced by families seeking affordable homes.

During the October 17 municipal elections, Gill represented the Safe Surrey Coalition led by McCallum. Her campaign addressed several challenges confronting the rapidly developing city, including housing affordability, infrastructure, road connectivity, public safety and employment opportunities for younger residents.

A central theme of her campaign was the need to give young people a more active role in shaping municipal policies. She maintained that decisions taken by city authorities have a direct impact on students, working professionals and young families, making their representation essential.

Gill’s entry into the city council marks a notable moment for young political representation in Canada. Her achievement is also likely to resonate with the Punjabi diaspora, particularly young people looking to participate in public service and leadership.
