Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): The Legislative Assembly of Alberta is set to mark Diwali with a special celebration at the Legislature Building on November 2, bringing together provincial leaders and members of the public to recognise the festival’s message of hope, unity and the victory of light over darkness.

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Ric McIver will host the event at 11:45 a.m. in the building’s rotunda.

The programme will begin with opening remarks by McIver, followed by addresses from Alberta Lieutenant Governor Salma Lakhani, Indigenous Relations Minister Rajan Sawhney, speaking on behalf of the Premier and provincial government, and Opposition Leader Naheed Nenshi.

McIver said Diwali reflects values that extend beyond its traditional celebrations, highlighting the importance of kindness, inclusion and community connections.

“Diwali celebrates the enduring values of light, hope and community,” the Speaker said, noting that the festival’s traditions carry a message of overcoming darkness and bringing people together.

Public invited to attend ceremony

The Legislative Assembly has invited members of the public to participate in the celebration in person at the Legislature Building.

Those unable to attend in Edmonton will be able to watch the event through a live broadcast on the Assembly’s online streaming platform. The ceremony will also be available through the Legislature’s official Facebook, X and YouTube channels.

The event will provide an opportunity for Alberta’s elected representatives and residents to recognise Diwali and acknowledge the cultural traditions and values associated with the festival.
