AAP Leader’s Brother Killed in Shooting Near Gurdwara in Amritsar Village

News Alert

Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): A man identified as Tirath Singh, the brother of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Karaj Singh, was killed in a shooting allegedly linked to an old dispute in Jhite Kalan village of Amritsar district on Monday night. His friend, Ranjit Singh, was also injured in the incident.

According to police, the two men were returning after offering prayers at a local gurdwara when they were confronted by the alleged attackers. The assailants reportedly fired seven to eight rounds before escaping from the scene.

Tirath Singh suffered critical gunshot injuries and was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Ranjit Singh received treatment for his injuries, with officials stating that his condition was out of danger.

Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said police had registered a case against four people — Gurdit Singh, Harkirat Singh, Gurjant Singh and Gora — all residents of Jhite Kalan. Police teams were conducting raids to trace and arrest the accused.

Investigators suspect that longstanding hostility between the families may have led to the attack. Police said Gurdit Singh allegedly had a dispute with Karaj Singh and his family. The two sides had reportedly clashed in the past, after which local residents intervened to settle the matter.

Preliminary details suggest that an argument broke out when the accused allegedly confronted Tirath Singh and Ranjit Singh near the gurdwara. The confrontation reportedly turned violent before shots were fired at Tirath Singh.

Karaj Singh serves as a block samiti member, while his mother is the village sarpanch affiliated with the AAP.

The Chatiwind police station registered the case based on statements provided by members of the victim’s family. No arrests had been reported at the time of filing this report, and efforts to apprehend the accused were ongoing.
