Donald Trump Defends Russia Policy, Says He Won’t Jeopardise Ukraine Peace Negotiations

After Iran Truce, Trump Targets Allies, Revives Greenland Debate

Washington (Rajeev Sharma): US President Donald Trump has defended his decision to delay signing a document related to Russia sanctions, saying he does not want to jeopardise ongoing efforts to negotiate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said discussions aimed at securing peace were making progress and argued that taking certain steps at the present time could push Moscow away from the negotiating table. He added that he could sign the document at a later date.

Trump also referred to ongoing hostage negotiations, presenting them as part of the broader diplomatic efforts under way. He maintained that his priority was to bring the conflict to an end without taking actions that could complicate negotiations.

Trump Links Russia Policy to Iran

The US president also cited Russia’s relationship with Iran as a factor behind his approach. He claimed Moscow was providing little assistance to the Islamic Republic compared with what it could offer and said he wanted to prevent a change in that situation.

His comments come amid wider international concerns over the links between the Russia-Ukraine conflict and tensions involving Iran, with developments in one region potentially affecting diplomatic and security calculations elsewhere.

Criticism of Ukraine’s Attacks on Russian Energy Infrastructure

Trump also criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over attacks targeting Russian diesel refineries. He argued that damage to the facilities was affecting global diesel markets, including supplies and prices in the United States.

According to Trump, the disruption was placing pressure on farmers, ranchers and businesses. He also pointed to Russian diesel exports, claiming that Moscow continued to supply millions of barrels to international markets at comparatively low prices.

The president accused Zelenskyy of failing to pursue an end to the war and criticised the financial assistance Ukraine has received from European countries and the previous US administration under Joe Biden. These remarks reflected Trump’s position on the conflict and his criticism of Kyiv’s strategy.

Trump further argued that Ukraine had lost substantial territory and suffered heavy losses among its male population. He said an agreement could have been reached on better terms two years earlier, although he did not provide further details in the post to substantiate that assertion.

Peace Remains Trump’s Stated Priority

Reiterating his position, Trump said he wanted the war to end and framed his decision on the Russia-related document as part of an effort to preserve the prospects for negotiations.

His statement highlights the administration’s stated preference for maintaining diplomatic channels with Moscow while balancing concerns over energy markets, international security and Russia’s ties with Iran.

The next steps will depend on developments in the negotiations and any subsequent decisions by the US administration regarding the document and its Russia policy.
