New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Two alleged criminals were injured after an exchange of fire with a team of the Northeast Delhi Police Special Staff in the Usmanpur area, police said.
The injured suspects have been identified as Mohammad Kaif and Mohammad Jaseem. Both suffered gunshot wounds to their legs and were taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
According to police, the Special Staff had received information that the two men were likely to pass through a forested stretch in Usmanpur while heading towards their homes. Acting on the tip-off, a police team positioned itself in the area and waited for the suspects.
When the two allegedly reached the location, police said they opened fire at the team. The officers responded, resulting in a gunfight between the two sides.
Police personnel escape injuries
During the exchange, two police officers also came under fire. Bullets reportedly struck their bulletproof jackets, but neither personnel sustained injuries.
Police said around 26 rounds were fired collectively by both sides during the encounter.
Following the exchange, Kaif and Jaseem were apprehended and shifted to a hospital for treatment of their gunshot injuries.
The circumstances surrounding the encounter, including the allegations against the two men and the events leading up to the shootout, are now being examined by investigators.
Delhi Police said the further investigation is underway and additional details are expected to emerge as the probe progresses.
