‘Gudda-Guddi’ Reference in Charanjit Singh Channi’s Son’s Post Fuels Fresh Buzz in Punjab Congress

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): A social media post by Rhythmjit Singh, son of former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, has triggered renewed discussion around the internal dynamics of the Punjab Congress.

Rhythmjit recently shared a video showcasing decisions and initiatives taken during the 111-day tenure of the Congress government led by his father in 2021. The video highlights the administration’s work during its relatively short stint and includes a song accompanying the presentation.

The timing of the post has attracted attention because of the use of the phrase “Gudda-Guddi”, a reference that has previously figured in political exchanges within the Punjab Congress.

The phrase brings back memories of comments made by former Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel earlier this year. At a time when speculation was circulating about a possible change in the state party leadership, Baghel had said that the issue was not a “game of puppets or dolls” and that any decision would follow discussions and consultations.

His remarks subsequently became part of the political discourse surrounding differences within the state Congress unit.

The latest development comes after another change at the top of the Punjab Congress organisation. Amarinder Singh Raja Warring stepped down as state Congress president, after which Pargat Singh was appointed to the position. The leadership transition has also coincided with reports about differences between supporters associated with the Warring and Channi camps.

Against this backdrop, Rhythmjit’s post has drawn attention from political observers and party circles. However, the video itself focuses on the work attributed to the Channi-led administration and does not directly name a political leader or make an explicit statement about the current Congress leadership.

Focus on Channi government’s record

The Congress government headed by Charanjit Singh Channi came to power in September 2021 and remained in office for around 111 days before the 2022 Punjab Assembly election.

During that period, the government announced a number of measures, including decisions concerning electricity tariffs and various welfare-related initiatives. Channi has continued to invoke the performance of his short tenure in subsequent political messaging.

The latest post by his son has therefore brought renewed attention to that record at a time when the Punjab Congress is undergoing another phase of organisational change.

Whether the “Gudda-Guddi” reference was intended as a political message or simply as part of the social media presentation remains open to interpretation.
