Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Community organizations across Alberta can now apply for funding aimed at promoting cultural understanding, strengthening community connections and supporting initiatives that address racism.
The provincial government has committed a combined $2.5 million through the 2026 Ethnocultural and Anti-Racism Grant programs. Of the total, $2 million will be distributed through the Ethnocultural Grant, while $500,000 has been allocated to anti-racism projects.
The programs are designed to support community-led projects, educational activities and events that bring people from different backgrounds together and contribute to more inclusive communities.
Ethnocultural Grant
The Ethnocultural Grant has a $2-million funding pool for organizations developing multicultural initiatives across Alberta.
Eligible groups can seek up to $50,000 for projects designed to encourage interaction and understanding between cultural communities. Grants of up to $15,000 are also available for initiatives that showcase Alberta’s diverse cultural traditions and heritage.
Associate Minister of Multiculturalism Muhammad Yaseen said grassroots organizations play an important role in helping Albertans connect with one another and learn about different cultures.
Organizations that have previously received support say the funding has helped create opportunities for communities to share traditions and strengthen relationships.
Anti-Racism Grant
A separate $500,000 fund will support community organizations working to increase awareness of racism and its effects.
Applicants can receive up to $10,000 for projects that combine public education with efforts to expand their anti-racism work. Smaller initiatives focused primarily on awareness and education can qualify for grants of up to $5,000.
Community groups that have benefited from the program have used the funding for activities involving cultural food, music, storytelling and other forms of community engagement.
The province said the two grant programs are intended to give local organizations the resources to develop initiatives that reflect the needs of their communities while encouraging greater understanding and stronger connections across Alberta.
