Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Senior agriculture officials from Canada, the United States and Mexico are meeting in Calgary for the 35th annual Tri-National Agricultural Accord, with discussions focused on trade, food security, disease prevention and the future of rural communities.
The four-day gathering began on September 28 and will continue through October 1. Alberta is hosting provincial and state representatives alongside industry participants from across North America.
Established in 1992, the accord provides a platform for agricultural leaders from the three countries to discuss shared challenges and identify areas for closer cooperation.
This year’s agenda includes measures to strengthen animal disease prevention, protect crops from plant health threats and support the economic development of rural communities. Trade and market opportunities are also expected to feature prominently in discussions.
Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Tara Sawyer said the meeting provides an opportunity to strengthen relationships between producers, processors and governments while addressing issues that affect the continent’s food system.
Representatives from the U.S. and Mexico are also highlighting the importance of predictable agricultural trade and greater cooperation across borders. Delegates are expected to exchange ideas and discuss ways to improve collaboration between farming and rural communities.
The 2026 meeting is also recognizing the International Year of the Woman Farmer, drawing attention to the contribution of women working across the agricultural and agri-food sectors in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
With agriculture closely connected to trade, food security and rural economies across North America, organizers say the accord is intended to strengthen cooperation and build longer-term partnerships among the three countries.
