Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): The Alberta government is committing $38.5 million toward municipal infrastructure needed to support a proposed Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) safety campus in Beaumont.
The funding will go to the City of Beaumont to help build roads, utilities and other municipal services within the city’s Innovation Park. The infrastructure is expected to support development of the proposed training campus while also making the area more accessible for future investment.
The planned facility would bring together specialized training for law enforcement personnel and commercial transportation professionals. Proposed features include an Emergency Vehicle Operator Course track for emergency and high-speed driving exercises, a firearms range, scenario-based training spaces and facilities dedicated to commercial vehicle instruction.
Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis said the infrastructure investment will help establish the foundation for a modern training centre while supporting employment and economic activity in the Beaumont area.
Focus on transportation and public safety
The proposed campus would build on existing cooperation between Alberta’s law enforcement agencies and the commercial transportation sector.
Alberta’s Sheriff Highway Patrol already works with the transportation industry on vehicle inspections, enforcement and road-safety requirements. Bringing additional training facilities together at one location could expand opportunities for hands-on instruction across both sectors.
AMTA Chair Tim Bennett said the proposed campus would increase training capacity and contribute to higher safety standards across Alberta’s transportation industry.
The province’s funding is specifically intended for municipal infrastructure. The AMTA will remain responsible for arranging financing for the campus itself, as well as its design, construction and eventual operation.
Expected economic impact
Officials also expect the development to attract additional investment to Beaumont’s Innovation Park and generate employment opportunities in the region.
Beaumont Mayor Lisa Vanderkwaak said the project could strengthen the community’s role in transportation and public safety training while contributing to regional economic development.
Leduc-Beaumont MLA Brandon Lunty said modern, practical training facilities are important for commercial drivers, first responders and other professionals who work in safety-critical environments.
With the municipal infrastructure work providing the groundwork, the proposed AMTA safety campus is expected to move closer to development while Beaumont’s Innovation Park remains open to other compatible projects and future investment.
