Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Former Punjab Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Capt. Amarinder Singh has made a significant assessment of Punjab’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, saying the principal contest at present appears to be between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
In an interview with The Tribune, Singh said the BJP had so far failed to make substantial political gains in Punjab. He also acknowledged that his own four-year association with the party had not produced the results he expected.
Singh’s comments are notable because the BJP has been working to expand its presence in Punjab and position itself as an independent political force in the state.
BJP still lacks substantial ground, says Amarinder
According to Singh, the BJP does not currently possess the statewide political base required to challenge Congress and AAP directly.
He suggested that the party may need to look at its previous alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) if it wants to improve its electoral prospects in Punjab.
The BJP and SAD were long-time allies before parting ways. Whether the two parties could work together again has remained a subject of political discussion as the 2027 election approaches.
Amarinder rules out return to Congress
Singh was also questioned about whether he could leave the BJP.
The former Chief Minister said he did not see a return to Congress as a possibility and indicated that joining the Akali Dal was not an option either. As a result, he said he had little choice but to continue with the BJP.
His remarks also touched on the Congress, which he said was dealing with an internal leadership tussle.
Has BJP accepted defeat?
Singh’s assessment has naturally raised questions about the BJP’s position ahead of the 2027 Punjab polls.
The party has been seeking to establish itself as a stronger force in the state, while Congress and AAP remain central players in Punjab’s electoral politics. Singh’s comments, however, present a different reading of the current political ground situation.
His remarks should be viewed as an assessment of the political landscape rather than evidence that the BJP has conceded the election. The 2027 contest is still some distance away, and political alliances, leadership decisions, candidate selection and campaign strategies could alter the equation considerably.
Punjab’s electoral battle remains open
The AAP will enter the next election seeking to retain the government it formed in 2022. Congress will aim to return to power, while the BJP is attempting to expand its organisation and voter base.
Meanwhile, the SAD continues to remain an important factor in discussions about Punjab’s political alliances.
Whether the BJP contests the election independently or reaches an understanding with another party, and whether Congress and AAP remain the two principal contenders, will become clearer as the election approaches.
For now, Amarinder Singh’s comments have added another layer to the political debate over the BJP’s strategy and its prospects in Punjab.
