Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has criticised the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over its recent search operations in the state, alleging that the central agency is being used to exert political pressure.
In a post on X, Cheema said repeated raids, questioning and searches at government-linked premises were creating an atmosphere of fear. He argued that allegations made during an investigation should not be treated as proof of wrongdoing unless they are established through evidence and due process.
His remarks come amid ongoing ED operations at multiple locations in Punjab, including premises linked to the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA). The agency’s action is reportedly connected to a money-laundering investigation involving a real estate company and matters concerning GMADA.
Cheema also questioned the timing of the enforcement action, coming as Punjab prepares for its next Assembly election. The Aam Aadmi Party has alleged that central investigative agencies are being used to put pressure on the state government and its officials, while those allegations remain disputed.
The Punjab government has also approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking intervention in the ongoing searches. The court has appointed a warrant officer to monitor the ED’s operations and submit a report.
Cheema said Punjab would continue to challenge what he described as attempts to intimidate or silence the state. He also indicated that allegations arising from investigations should ultimately be assessed on the basis of material established through the legal process.
The ED’s investigation is continuing, and the agency has not concluded its proceedings in the matter. The allegations made by Cheema and the AAP regarding political motivation are their claims and have not been established as facts.
