Addressing media representatives during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Carney reflected on the health of bilateral engagement and the prospective schedule for formalizing an economic pact. He characterized the partnership with New Delhi as vital to Ottawa’s global strategy, underscoring joint priorities across international security, commercial expansion, and cultural links.
The anticipated trip builds on a commitment made by both heads of government during last year’s G20 gathering, where they aimed to wrap up trade talks prior to the subsequent summit. With the upcoming G20 leaders’ conference slated for mid-December in Florida under American leadership, Ottawa anticipates welcoming Modi in close coordination with those dates.
Carney indicated that Indian authorities have signaled Modi’s availability around the Florida summit window, though precise scheduling remains subject to diplomatic finalization. This would mark Modi’s first visit to Canada since attending the G7 conference in mid-2025, which occurred shortly after Carney succeeded Justin Trudeau as head of government.
Commercial exchanges between both nations continue to show strength, with two-way goods trade recorded at 8.6 billion USD in 2024, complemented by an additional 14.3 billion USD generated across services transactions.
