Surrey (Amrit Dhot): Surrey’s Newton Athletic Park turned into a vibrant hub of sports and community spirit on Sunday as the International Student Union (ISU) hosted the 6th Pendu Khed Mela, bringing together athletes, families, youth and community members for an afternoon of competition, entertainment and celebration.
The sixth edition of the popular community sports gathering featured cricket, volleyball, seep, tug-of-war and badminton, along with musical chairs and other family-oriented activities. The event provided athletes with an opportunity to showcase their skills while giving families and spectators a chance to enjoy a day of community recreation.
Speaking with National Times, Jashan Sandhu shared details of the event and highlighted the Mela’s focus on sports, community participation and bringing people together. He said the event has continued to grow as a platform where athletes, families and community members can connect through sports and entertainment.
A major attraction was the announcement of more than $20,000 in cash prizes, gifts and player rewards across the competitions. Organizers also offered special recognition for outstanding players, including a bike for the Cricket Man of the Tournament, as well as LED gifts, gift cards and other prizes.
The event was open to the public free of charge, with organizers providing free food for attendees, along with giveaways, gifts and surprise activities. The family-friendly programming added to the community atmosphere throughout the day.
The Pendu Khed Mela has become an annual gathering combining competitive sports with cultural and social interaction, providing opportunities for youth and athletes while encouraging families to participate in community activities.
The International Student Union thanked participants, volunteers, supporters and community members for contributing to the sixth edition of the Pendu Khed Mela and helping strengthen Surrey’s community sports culture.
