PORT POWER, LOCAL JOBS AND DELTA’S FUTURE: ILWU LOCAL 502 BACKS DYLAN KRUGER FOR MAYOR

Delta, B.C. (Rajeev Sharma): Councillor Dylan Kruger has secured the backing of International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 502 in his campaign for Mayor of Delta, with the union citing his record on local jobs, infrastructure and regional advocacy.

The endorsement comes as Delta prepares for significant industrial expansion, including the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 (RBT2) project, which is expected to have implications for the region’s port operations and surrounding communities.

In a letter to Delta residents, ILWU Local 502 president Al Reason described the municipality as being at an important economic juncture. He said Kruger has demonstrated the ability to represent Delta’s interests while working with regional and federal authorities.

The union pointed specifically to Kruger’s One Delta platform, which includes establishing a dedicated municipal economic development office aimed at supporting local industries as port activity expands.

Fiscal policy also featured prominently in the endorsement. Kruger has pledged not to introduce new municipal taxes, levies or fees, a position the union said would help address affordability concerns among working families.

Infrastructure at the Centre

ILWU Local 502 also highlighted Kruger’s advocacy for greater regional accountability and increased investment in Delta’s infrastructure. Roads, dikes, policing and security are among the areas the union says will require attention as industrial activity grows.

Reason said major projects such as RBT2 should generate economic benefits without placing an excessive burden on neighbouring communities.

Kruger welcomed the endorsement, calling Delta’s longshore workforce a vital part of both the local economy and Canada’s supply chain.

With the municipal election scheduled for October 17, the endorsement adds the support of a major labour organisation to Kruger’s campaign as the debate over Delta’s industrial future intensifies.
