Alberta (Rajeev Sharma): Thousands of Alberta students could gain access to new or improved learning spaces as the provincial government advances four public charter school projects expected to create or renovate more than 5,150 student spaces.
The latest approvals cover projects in Calgary, Edmonton and Medicine Hat, with funding supporting planning and design work as school authorities develop the proposed facilities.
Unlike private schools, public charter schools are tuition-free and publicly funded, but they have greater flexibility to offer specialised educational programs. The province says the model provides families with additional choice within Alberta’s public education system.
Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said the projects are intended to support programs tailored to different student interests and needs while expanding access to specialised learning environments.
Four Projects Move Forward
The approved initiatives include the Connect Charter School project in Calgary, which has received planning funding, and the New Generations Calgary School project, which has been approved for design funding.
In Medicine Hat, the CAPE Charter School project has received planning support, while Edmonton’s Heritage Valley school project, proposed by STEM Collegiate Canada Society, has also moved into the planning stage.
The Heritage Valley project is expected to eventually provide specialised STEM learning space for 1,200 students.
Charter Expansion Crosses 10,500 Spaces
The latest announcements bring the number of public charter school projects approved by Alberta through the Schools Now program to 12.
Together, those projects are expected to deliver more than 10,500 new or renovated student spaces, including nearly 8,300 new spaces and over 2,200 renovated ones.
Connect Charter School Society board chair Bryce Monar said the proposed 775-student high school will allow the school to serve more families while maintaining its specialised public education model.
With the four new projects now advancing, Alberta is expanding not only classroom capacity but also the range of educational choices available to families.
