New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): A three-storey building being used as a student hostel collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday afternoon, triggering a large-scale rescue operation near Delhi University’s South Campus.
The building reportedly came down at around 1.30 pm, following which fire services, police and disaster response teams rushed to the spot.
At least six people have been rescued alive from the debris so far, while teams are continuing to search the rubble amid concerns that more people could be trapped.
18 Fire Engines Rushed To Satya Niketan
As many as 18 fire engines were deployed following the collapse, while police and disaster response personnel joined the operation.
Rescue teams are using earth-moving machinery, cutters and other equipment to remove debris and gain access to portions of the collapsed structure.
The operation is being carried out carefully as authorities work to determine whether anyone remains trapped beneath the rubble.
Satya Niketan, located close to Delhi University’s South Campus, has a large student population and several hostels and paying guest accommodations.
Nearby Buildings Evacuated As Precaution
Authorities have evacuated adjoining buildings as a precaution while rescue and debris-clearing operations remain underway.
The evacuation is aimed at keeping residents away from the immediate collapse zone and preventing further casualties in case surrounding structures have also been affected.
Police have also secured the area to allow emergency teams to carry out rescue work.
Did Heavy Rain Lead To Delhi Building Collapse?
The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been officially established.
Preliminary observations, however, suggest that persistent rainfall in Delhi over the past two days may have affected the building’s structural stability. A detailed assessment will be required to determine what led to the structure giving way.
Rescue operations remain the immediate priority, with authorities focusing on locating and safely extracting anyone who may still be trapped.
