New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): At least three people have died after a multi-storey building housing a boys’ paying guest accommodation collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan on Sunday afternoon, turning what began as a rescue operation into a major tragedy.
Nine people have been pulled out of the rubble so far, according to the latest information from authorities. Several of the injured were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, while another was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital.
Search operations remain underway as rescue personnel attempt to locate anyone who may still be trapped beneath the debris.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the collapse site to review rescue efforts and later met the injured undergoing treatment at AIIMS.
Satya Niketan Building Collapse: What We Know So Far
The incident occurred at around 1.30 pm in Satya Niketan, a major student residential hub near Delhi University’s South Campus.
According to police, the structure was around 40 to 50 years old and consisted of a basement and five upper floors. It was being used as a boys’ PG accommodation.
Preliminary information indicates that repair work was underway in the basement when the structure collapsed. The exact cause, however, will be established after an investigation.
Teams from the NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, DDMA, CATS and other agencies have been deployed for the rescue operation.
3 Dead, Several Injured In Delhi Building Collapse
The death toll climbed as rescue operations continued through the evening.
Of those pulled from the debris, three have died. Several others suffered injuries and were rushed to hospitals for treatment.
Heavy machinery and specialised rescue equipment are being used to carefully remove concrete slabs and other debris as teams continue searching for possible survivors.
An adjoining building was also evacuated as a precaution.
CM Rekha Gupta Visits Site, Meets Injured
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reached Satya Niketan to oversee the situation as the multi-agency operation continued.
Gupta said all concerned agencies were working together and that the immediate priority was to safely rescue those trapped and provide assistance to affected families.
The Chief Minister subsequently visited AIIMS to meet those injured in the collapse.
She has also warned that responsibility for the incident will be fixed and those found guilty will not be spared.
Repair Work Was Underway In Basement
One of the key aspects investigators are expected to examine is the repair work reportedly taking place in the basement before the collapse.
Police said preliminary local inquiries revealed that the building was several decades old.
Residents have also raised questions over whether recent rainfall and water accumulation may have affected the structure. However, authorities have not yet officially established the cause of the collapse, and these possibilities remain subject to investigation.
Rescue Operation Continues In Satya Niketan
Satya Niketan has a high concentration of students because of its proximity to Delhi University’s South Campus, with numerous PG accommodations and hostels operating in the neighbourhood.
The congested lanes and tightly packed buildings have made the rescue operation challenging.
Emergency teams remain at the site as authorities continue clearing the rubble and assessing whether more people are trapped.
The casualty figures may be updated as the rescue operation progresses.
