Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): A police operation in west Delhi’s Bakkarwala area ended in an exchange of gunfire after two alleged shooters linked to the Himanshu Bhau gang reportedly opened fire at a police team. Both suspects were injured and taken into custody, according to Delhi Police.
The operation followed an intelligence input received by the Crime Branch at RK Puram. Police were informed that members of the alleged gang could arrive in Bakkarwala to attack a person they had targeted. The information also indicated that gang leader Himanshu Bhau had allegedly issued threats against Dr Narendra Sharma, owner of RRM Hospital.
Acting on the input, personnel from the CIA, including ASI Jasbir, joined the Crime Branch team to develop the information and monitor the area.
During surveillance, officers noticed a Mahindra Thar and attempted to stop it. Police said the driver instead accelerated and tried to get away towards the UER service road near a flyover.
The chase came to an end after the Thar collided with a Mahindra utility vehicle. Two occupants then allegedly left the SUV and fled on foot towards Bakkarwala Nala Road.
Police said the fleeing suspects were challenged and asked to surrender. Instead, they allegedly fired approximately eight rounds towards the police personnel using 9 mm pistols.
The police team responded in what officials described as self-defence. Six rounds were first fired into the air as warnings, followed by controlled firing aimed at stopping the suspects. Both sustained firearm injuries and were subsequently apprehended.
The suspects were identified as Sameer, aged 19, from Rithal Phogat in Rohtak, Haryana, and a Child in Conflict with Law.
Police said both were quickly taken to RTR Hospital in a private vehicle for emergency treatment. Two Glock pistols were allegedly recovered from the suspects.
Investigators are now examining the alleged connection of the two with the Himanshu Bhau gang and looking into whether they had arrived in Bakkarwala to carry out the suspected attack. Further investigation is underway.
