Chamba (Rajeev Sharma): Residents in parts of Himachal Pradesh were startled by two separate earthquakes that struck Chamba and Kangra districts on Tuesday evening. Although the tremors were strong enough to cause alarm, authorities reported no casualties or property damage.
The first seismic event was recorded in Chamba at 6:54 pm and measured 3.6 in magnitude, according to the National Centre for Seismology. The epicentre was identified near Kareri, with the earthquake originating about 5 km beneath the surface.
Around 45 minutes later, the second tremor occurred in Kangra. The earthquake was also recorded at a shallow depth of approximately 5 km, making the movement more noticeable to people in the affected areas.
The sudden shaking prompted some residents to leave their houses temporarily as a precaution. However, officials said there was no information about injuries, loss of life or damage to residential and other structures.
District authorities and relevant agencies are monitoring the situation and keeping track of any further seismic activity.
Chamba and Kangra are among the districts situated in seismic zone V, a classification that indicates a high level of earthquake hazard. The latest tremors have once again drawn attention to the need for preparedness in the earthquake-prone region.
