Uttarakhand Weather Update: Heavy Rain Disrupts Traffic, Orange Alert Sounds for Two Districts

Dehradun (Rajeev Sharma): Persistent monsoon showers continued to create difficulties across Uttarakhand, with several areas witnessing water accumulation, swollen water bodies and landslides. The continuing spell of rain has affected movement on mountain roads and disrupted normal activities in parts of the state.

The India Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for Dehradun and Tehri, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely during intense spells, prompting authorities and residents to remain cautious.

Other districts have been placed under a Yellow Alert, with the weather office predicting isolated heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms. Rainfall activity is expected to remain strong through the middle of the week.

The impact of the weather has been particularly visible in the hill districts. Landslides and debris falling onto roads have interrupted traffic at several locations, while prolonged rainfall has increased the risk of further blockages.

The Tanakpur-Tawaghat National Highway and the route used for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra were among the stretches affected by landslides, with traffic reportedly remaining halted for more than five hours. Debris also temporarily obstructed the Askot-Karnaprayag road between Berinag and Thal.

On the Thal-Munsiyari road, vehicles were stranded for several hours after a dumper truck became stuck near La-Jhekla. The disruption added to travel difficulties in the region.

Dehradun has also experienced waterlogging in low-lying pockets following heavy showers, while increased water levels in rivers and streams have added to concerns. Pithoragarh and other parts of Kumaon have similarly experienced the effects of sustained rainfall.

The IMD has forecast continued spells of rain and thunderstorms from August 18 to 20. With rainfall expected to persist, officials and commuters face the added challenge of landslides, debris on roads and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
