Tarn Taran (Gurpreet Singh): A violent armed confrontation triggered by a prolonged property dispute claimed two lives in Pahuwind village, located in the Khemkaran constituency of Tarn Taran district, on Saturday. The deadly clash involved two opposing factions, one associated with former Shiromani Akali Dal sarpanch Amarjit Singh and the other aligned with Aam Aadmi Party member Sukhraj Singh, both asserting competing ownership claims over a 1.5-acre parcel of land.
Tensions reached a breaking point when members from both groups confronted each other at the site, quickly escalating into an exchange of gunfire. Sukhraj Singh died instantly after sustaining a bullet wound to the head, while Nirmal Singh, the brother of former sarpanch Amarjit Singh, succumbed to his injuries after being shot three times during the shootout.
A police contingent led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Bhikhiwind) Atul Soni was deployed to the scene to restore calm and secure the area. Law enforcement officials confirmed that preventive measures under Sections 107/151 of the CrPC had previously been initiated against both factions due to past disputes over the land.
Police have taken possession of both bodies and transferred them for post-mortem examinations. Authorities have launched formal legal proceedings and are recording statements from eyewitnesses and family members from both sides to establish the full sequence of events.
