Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): The Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh issued a yellow alert for heavy downpours at isolated places in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar districts on Tuesday, forecasting partly cloudy skies and light showers for Chandigarh. The state’s average maximum temperature dropped by 1.3 degrees Celsius, with Gurdaspur recording a high of 35.8 degrees Celsius, while Chandigarh recorded 31.5 degrees Celsius—two degrees below the seasonal norm.
Showers were recorded across five districts on Monday, with Amritsar receiving the highest rainfall at 53 mm. Light precipitation was recorded at Pathankot’s Thein Dam and Rupnagar’s Ropar KVK, alongside trace rainfall in Ludhiana and Patiala. According to Meteorological Centre Director Surender Paul, an active western disturbance will maintain precipitation across the state over the coming week, bringing widespread light to moderate rainfall on August 11 and August 13.
Meanwhile, Punjab’s peak electricity demand touched 13,300 MW late Monday evening, with total power consumption remaining slightly below the state’s allocated drawl schedule. Water levels at key regional reservoirs continue to remain well below maximum safety thresholds, with Bhakra Dam recorded at 1,614 feet—66 feet below its maximum capacity—and Pong Dam recorded at 1,348.58 feet, approximately 41.42 feet below its capacity mark.
