Shimla (Rajeev Sharma): Rain activity is expected to pick up across Himachal Pradesh, with the Meteorological Department forecasting intermittent showers in different parts of the state until August 13. Several areas could experience heavy rainfall during the initial phase of the spell, raising concerns over landslides and disruption of road connectivity.
According to the weather forecast, rainfall is likely to intensify at several places on August 9 and may remain significant on August 10. Scattered showers are expected to continue on August 11 and 12, while some parts of the state could receive rain on August 13.
Hilly areas face higher risk
The expected rainfall has put vulnerable mountainous stretches on alert. Continuous showers can loosen soil and rocks on slopes, increasing the possibility of landslides and debris falling onto roads.
The rise in rainfall activity could also cause water levels in rivers, streams and seasonal drains to increase. Residents have therefore been advised not to approach riverbanks, streams or other areas where sudden changes in water levels could pose a danger.
Travel plans may be affected
The administration has urged people travelling through the state’s hill roads to remain particularly careful during the wet spell. Routes in districts such as Mandi and other vulnerable areas could face temporary interruptions if landslides or falling debris occur.
Drivers have been advised to reduce speed, remain alert on narrow and mountainous roads and check the latest road conditions before starting their journey. Travellers have also been asked to avoid unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall.
Authorities maintain vigilance
District administrations and disaster-management agencies are keeping a watch on weather conditions and vulnerable locations. Officials have been asked to remain prepared for emergencies arising from heavy rainfall, including road blockages and sudden rises in water levels.
People across the state have been advised to rely on official weather bulletins and local administration alerts and follow safety instructions whenever conditions deteriorate.
