Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): The Punjab Legislative Assembly will convene its Monsoon Session on Monday, with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government expected to face sharp questioning from the opposition over several pressing issues. The session, scheduled to continue until August 10, is considered the final monsoon sitting before the present Assembly completes its tenure.
The day’s proceedings will begin at 11 a.m. with members paying homage to departed leaders and eminent personalities. The House will then move to Question Hour and Zero Hour, allowing legislators to seek clarifications from the government and raise matters related to their constituencies as well as broader public concerns.
Among the legislative business likely to be taken up on the opening day is the introduction of the Punjab Common Infrastructure (Regulation and Maintenance) Amendment Bill, 2026, which is expected to be tabled for consideration.
Opposition to Raise Multiple Issues
The session is expected to witness intense exchanges as the Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepare to challenge the government on a host of issues. The opposition is likely to target the ruling dispensation over law and order, the growing drug problem, examination paper leaks, farmers’ concerns, the state’s financial position and other matters affecting the public.
Sacrilege Legislation May Be Deferred
Although there has been considerable discussion over bringing amendments to laws related to the sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, such a proposal is unlikely to be introduced during the current session.
The issue remains under consultation after the Akal Takht constituted a panel of legal and religious experts to deliberate on the matter and engage with the state government. With discussions still underway, the government appears to be in no hurry to move forward with legislative changes.
Religious Directives Could Draw Attention
The Assembly proceedings may also be influenced by recent directions issued by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, who declared Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann as “Panth Doshi” and advised Sikh legislators not to address or make eye contact with him during Assembly proceedings.
Political observers expect the matter to surface during debates, adding another layer of political significance to an already crucial session.
With legislative proposals and political confrontations expected to dominate proceedings, the Monsoon Session is likely to be closely watched as both the government and opposition seek to strengthen their positions ahead of the next Assembly elections.
