Ludhiana (Gurpreet Singh): A violent altercation during a religious event at a Gurdwara in Punjab’s Ludhiana district claimed the life of a Nihang Singh late Sunday night, prompting police to register a murder case and launch a search for the accused.
The incident took place at Baharla Gurdwara Sahib in Paddi village under the Dehlon police station limits, where devotees had gathered to observe Miri-Piri Diwas. The victim, identified as Sonu, allegedly suffered a fatal neck injury after being attacked with a kirpan. The accused, Sohan Singh, is reported to be a resident of Fatehabad, Haryana.
According to the complaint filed by the Gurdwara’s Granthi, Jasvir Singh, the religious ceremonies, including the Bhog of Sri Akhand Path Sahib, had concluded peacefully and the premises were crowded with members of the Sangat and Nihang Singhs. Later in the evening, a heated exchange reportedly broke out near the langar hall.
Police said Sonu was allegedly shouting during the argument when the confrontation escalated. The accused is alleged to have struck him on the neck with a kirpan, leaving him critically injured.
Those present immediately rushed the victim to Sidhu Hospital in Doraha for treatment. However, doctors declared him dead after examination, stating that he had sustained severe blood loss.
Following the incident, Dehlon police reached the spot and began collecting evidence. Based on the eyewitness statement, a case has been registered against Sohan Singh under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with the offence of murder.
Police have taken the body into custody for post-mortem examination and launched raids to arrest the accused. Investigators are also trying to ascertain what triggered the confrontation that ended in the fatal attack inside the Gurdwara premises.
