Shimla (Rajeev Sharma): Himachal Pradesh is likely to witness another prolonged spell of monsoon activity, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall across the state until August 2. The weather agency has issued Orange and Yellow alerts for several districts, warning of heavy showers, flash floods and landslides over the coming days.
An Orange Alert has been sounded for Sirmaur and Bilaspur on Tuesday, while Shimla, Mandi and Solan have been placed under a Yellow Alert. The IMD has also cautioned that low-lying areas in Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur could face flash flood-like situations if rainfall intensifies.
Officials have advised residents and tourists to stay away from rivers, seasonal streams, waterfalls and landslide-prone stretches, as continuous rainfall may increase the risk of road blockages and slope failures.
According to the forecast, the monsoon is expected to strengthen further on July 30 and 31. Orange Alerts have been issued for Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla and Sirmaur on July 30. On the following day, Una, Bilaspur, Chamba, Kangra and Shimla are expected to receive very heavy rainfall, while districts including Kullu, Solan, Hamirpur and Mandi will remain under a Yellow Alert.
Meteorological records indicate that Himachal Pradesh has received 291 mm of rainfall between June 1 and July 26, compared to the normal seasonal average of 321.2 mm, leaving the state with an overall 9 per cent rainfall deficit despite recent spells of heavy rain.
With wet weather expected to persist through the week, authorities have urged the public to remain updated with official weather bulletins, avoid non-essential travel in vulnerable hilly areas, and follow all advisories issued by local administrations to minimise risks during the active monsoon period.
