Toronto (Rajeev Sharma): A young woman of Punjabi origin lost her life in a fatal shooting in Toronto’s Etobicoke neighbourhood, with investigators describing the incident as a deliberate attack. Police have arrested a 37-year-old Brampton resident in connection with the case and charged him with first-degree murder.
The victim has been identified as Navneet Kaur, 26, a Toronto resident. According to the Toronto Police Service, officers responded to reports of gunfire early Friday morning and found Kaur suffering from critical injuries. Despite immediate medical intervention by emergency responders, she died at the scene.
Investigators believe the suspect approached Kaur shortly before the shooting and that the two exchanged a few words before the attack took place. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the victim and the accused were personally acquainted, saying that aspect of the investigation is still being examined.
The accused, Sharnjeet Singh, 37, was taken into custody following a coordinated operation involving the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) after allegedly fleeing the crime scene. In addition to the murder charge, Singh has also been charged with violating the conditions of a previous legal undertaking.
Eyewitnesses described the incident as sudden and shocking. One nearby resident told local media that the man appeared to have a brief conversation with the woman before producing a firearm and opening fire. The witness said the attack unfolded within seconds, leaving people in the area stunned.
The incident has heightened concerns among residents, many of whom have questioned public safety following the killing. Community members have called for a thorough investigation and increased security measures in the neighbourhood.
Police confirmed that the case is being treated as a targeted homicide and stated that there is currently no indication of an ongoing threat to the public. However, investigators continue to gather evidence to determine the motive behind the shooting.
Sharnjeet Singh was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto following his arrest.
Authorities have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or has surveillance footage, dashcam recordings or any other information that could assist the investigation to contact Toronto Police as the probe continues.
