Alberta Sets Record with More Than 14,000 Registered Physicians, Largest Annual Increase on Record

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta has reached a new milestone in physician recruitment and retention, recording the highest number of fully registered physicians in the province’s history. According to newly released statistics from the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), the province now has 14,156 fully registered physicians, an increase of 1,226 doctors compared with the same period last year. The nearly 10 per cent year-over-year increase is the largest annual growth in physician numbers ever recorded in Alberta.

The figures highlight significant growth in Alberta’s physician workforce amid ongoing efforts to strengthen access to health care across the province. The increase is expected to support expanding health-care services and help address physician shortages in many communities, including rural and underserved areas.

The record-setting total reflects continued physician recruitment and retention efforts as Alberta works to meet the health-care needs of its growing population. The newly released CPSA data marks an all-time high for the province and represents the strongest annual increase in Alberta’s physician workforce since records have been tracked.
