New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Social activist Sonam Wangchuk remains under close medical supervision at Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors say he is undergoing necessary treatment after the prolonged effects of his hunger strike led to changes in his health indicators.
In its latest medical update issued on Sunday, the hospital said Wangchuk’s vital signs are stable, but blood test results continue to reflect the impact of extended fasting. Doctors have stressed that while there is no immediate medical emergency, his condition requires continuous observation and specialised care to prevent any unforeseen complications.
According to the hospital, a multidisciplinary team comprising specialists from Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, New Delhi, is overseeing his treatment. Medical experts are conducting regular assessments and monitoring his clinical parameters around the clock as part of his recovery plan.
Hospital authorities noted that prolonged fasting can place considerable stress on multiple body systems, making sustained medical intervention essential even when a patient’s condition appears stable.
Wangchuk was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday after being shifted from Jantar Mantar, where he had been observing an indefinite hunger strike since June 28. His protest was in support of demands for greater accountability over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and concerns surrounding the reported deaths of students linked to the controversy.
Earlier, the hospital had stated that Wangchuk had declined intravenous fluids, oral rehydration solutions and medication despite repeated counselling by the treating doctors and an independent AIIMS expert. It had also indicated that consent from his family regarding the proposed medical intervention was awaited.
The latest health bulletin, however, confirms that doctors are continuing to provide the required medical care while closely tracking his recovery. The hospital emphasised that all necessary clinical measures are being taken to safeguard his health as specialists remain vigilant over any changes in his condition.
Wangchuk’s hospitalisation has drawn nationwide attention, with supporters continuing to express concern over his health while reiterating the demands raised during the ongoing protest. Medical experts maintain that careful monitoring will remain crucial until his body recovers from the physiological effects of the extended fast.
