Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): dmonton is preparing to welcome athletes from across the globe as the city hosts the fifth edition of the Edmonton Athletics Invitational on July 12, a key event on the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver calendar.
More than 200 athletes, coaches and officials representing 15 countries are expected to participate in the competition at Foote Field. The meet offers valuable international ranking points, making it an important stop for competitors aiming to qualify for upcoming global championships.
The Alberta government has extended financial support of over $181,000 through its Major Sport Events grant program to help organise the tournament. Officials estimate the event will inject more than $1 million into the local economy, with thousands of spectators expected to attend.
The competition will feature a wide range of disciplines, including sprint races, middle- and long-distance events, field competitions and para-athletics, giving fans an opportunity to watch both established champions and emerging talent compete on the same stage.
Several top Alberta athletes are expected to headline the event, including Olympic 800-metre silver medallist Marco Arop of Edmonton. Paralympic sprinter Amanda Rummery, who hails from Sherwood Park, and Calgary’s Paralympic long jumper Noah Vucsics are also among the athletes set to represent the province.
Organisers say the invitational has grown steadily over the past five years and continues to strengthen Edmonton’s reputation as a destination capable of staging high-level international sporting events.
Tourism officials believe the meet will benefit hotels, restaurants and local businesses while showcasing Alberta’s sporting infrastructure to visiting athletes and teams from around the world.
