Continuous Rain Keeps Chandigarh on Alert; IMD Warns of More Downpours, Civic Teams Deployed Across City

Chandigarh (Naval Kishore): Chandigarh remained under a spell of persistent monsoon showers on Friday as overnight rain and cloudy skies disrupted normal movement across the city. With weather conditions expected to remain unstable, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned that more intense rainfall could occur over the Tricity region during the day.

The latest weather assessment indicates that Chandigarh, along with neighbouring Mohali and Panchkula, may witness repeated spells of moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Officials have advised residents to limit outdoor movement, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.

Several stretches across the city experienced water accumulation after continuous rain, affecting vehicular traffic during the morning hours. Municipal authorities deployed field teams to monitor vulnerable locations, operate pumping stations and ensure that blocked drainage points were cleared at the earliest.

Emergency response teams have also been placed on standby to deal with complaints related to waterlogging, falling trees and traffic disruptions if rainfall intensifies further.

According to the IMD, the current weather pattern is being driven by an active southwest monsoon system over north India, supported by abundant moisture and favourable atmospheric conditions. These factors are likely to trigger intermittent rain across Chandigarh over the next few days.

Weather officials expect rainfall activity to continue through the weekend, with isolated heavy showers possible until Monday. Along with rain, gusty winds and lightning may also accompany thunderstorms, prompting authorities to urge people to exercise caution.

Residents have been advised to avoid standing near electricity poles, trees and unstable structures during storms. Commuters have also been asked to remain cautious while driving, as slippery roads and reduced visibility could increase the risk of accidents.

Although rainfall is expected to persist in the immediate future, meteorologists believe the intensity of monsoon activity may gradually decline early next week. From Tuesday onwards, weather conditions are likely to become comparatively stable, with only scattered light showers expected.

Officials have reiterated that the public should continue monitoring weather bulletins and follow instructions issued by local authorities, especially if fresh alerts are announced during the ongoing spell of heavy rain.
