Donald Trump Says India-Pakistan Conflict Was Close to Nuclear Escalation, Questions Iran’s Intentions Despite Calls for Deal

After Iran Truce, Trump Targets Allies, Revives Greenland Debate

Washington (Rajeev Sharma): US President Donald Trump has claimed that the recent military confrontation between India and Pakistan had reached a dangerous stage and suggested that it could have escalated into a nuclear conflict. Speaking to reporters, Trump asserted that diplomatic intervention helped prevent a much larger catastrophe.

According to Trump, the hostilities between the two South Asian neighbours had intensified significantly, with multiple aircraft reportedly being brought down during the conflict. He said the situation had become so serious that millions of lives were potentially at risk if tensions had continued to spiral.

Referring to his conversations with Pakistan’s leadership, Trump claimed that the country’s Prime Minister acknowledged his role in helping de-escalate the crisis. Trump added that the number of lives saved could have been far greater than initially estimated, describing the episode as one of the most dangerous international confrontations in recent times.

During the interaction, Trump also addressed the latest US military action against Iran. He maintained that American forces had already achieved their strategic objectives and claimed Iran’s military capabilities had been significantly weakened.

The US President further revealed that Iranian representatives had recently reached out seeking renewed negotiations. However, he questioned whether Tehran could be trusted to honour any future agreement, saying that willingness to negotiate alone was not enough.

Responding to a question about Iran’s alleged attacks on commercial vessels despite expressing interest in diplomacy, Trump described the country’s recent actions as unpredictable. He suggested that while Iran appeared eager to strike a deal, its behaviour continued to raise concerns about its reliability as a negotiating partner.

Trump’s remarks come at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, with Washington continuing to balance military pressure and diplomatic engagement in the Middle East, while also closely monitoring security developments in South Asia.
