Shopian (Rajeev Sharma): The search operation against two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district remained underway on Sunday, with security agencies continuing an intensive combing exercise for the second consecutive day.
The operation, launched after intelligence agencies tracked the movement of the suspected militants, has seen multiple teams of the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) deployed across the Meemandar area. Officials said the security grid has been further strengthened to ensure the suspects do not escape through nearby orchards or adjoining villages.
According to officials, surveillance inputs had indicated the presence of the two local militants in a densely vegetated orchard. As security personnel moved in to search the area, the suspects allegedly opened fire, triggering an exchange of gunfire before retreating deeper into the foliage.
With thick summer vegetation providing natural concealment, security forces have adopted a cautious approach. Additional troops from the Army’s counter-insurgency formations have been positioned around the orchard, while the surrounding area has been illuminated during the night to minimise the possibility of movement under the cover of darkness.
Officials identified the two suspected militants as Latif and Zakir, both residents of Kulgam district. Investigators believe the duo became associated with the banned outfit in recent years and were allegedly active in supporting militant operations in south Kashmir.
Security agencies said the search is being conducted in a phased manner, with personnel systematically clearing villages, orchards, and other vulnerable locations. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and cooperate with the forces until the operation concludes.
Shopian continues to be viewed as a strategically significant district because of its geographical links to several parts of South Kashmir. Officials said neutralising local militant networks remains an important objective, as these operatives are often involved in providing logistical assistance, facilitating recruitment, and supporting terrorist activities in the region.
Authorities have maintained that the operation will continue until the entire area has been thoroughly searched and the suspects have been accounted for.
