Relief Likely as Rainfall Activity Intensifies Across Punjab, Chandigarh; Strong Winds Forecast This Week

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): After enduring several days of soaring temperatures and sticky humidity, residents of Punjab and Chandigarh may finally witness a shift in weather conditions as the southwest monsoon begins to strengthen over the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a fresh spell of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next few days.

According to the latest weather outlook, isolated showers are expected to begin in parts of the region before widespread rainfall sets in from July 2 onwards. A Yellow Alert has been issued for several districts, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and winds reaching 40-50 kmph.

Meteorologists said the changing weather pattern is likely to bring a noticeable fall in temperatures, offering much-needed respite from the prolonged heatwave conditions that have affected both urban and rural areas.

While the maximum temperature has dipped slightly over the past day, it continues to remain above the seasonal average across Punjab. Humidity levels have also remained high, making outdoor conditions uncomfortable despite minor fluctuations in temperature.

Faridkot continued to be among the hottest places in the state, recording temperatures close to 44°C, while several districts reported unusually warm nights, preventing residents from getting relief even after sunset.

In Chandigarh, cloudy skies are expected to dominate the weather over the coming days. Intermittent rain and thundershowers are likely to reduce the daytime temperature by a few degrees, with the mercury expected to settle near 33°C during the active spell.

The IMD has indicated that monsoon conditions will become more favourable between July 2 and July 4, increasing the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall across many parts of Punjab and the Union Territory. The rain is expected to improve weather conditions and reduce the prevailing heat and humidity.

Officials have advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorms, particularly while travelling or working in open areas. Residents have also been urged to monitor official weather advisories, as strong winds and lightning could temporarily disrupt normal activities in some locations.

Weather experts believe the approaching spell could mark the beginning of sustained monsoon activity in the region, with rainfall expected to become more frequent as the week progresses.
