Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta Energy and Minerals Minister Brian Jean has welcomed a commitment from oil producers to support the development of a proposed pipeline linking Alberta’s energy sector with Canada’s west coast.
Jean issued the statement after the Explorers and Producers Association of Canada (EPAC) wrote to the federal government on August 14, outlining the expected participation of its members in the proposed project.
According to the minister, EPAC indicated that a significant number of its upstream oil-producing companies are expected to commit volumes to the pipeline. The association represents producers responsible for more than 40 per cent of Canada’s oil output, making the indication a significant development for the proposed infrastructure project.
Jean described the expected commitments as a sign of confidence from Alberta’s oil and gas industry and said the province remains prepared to supply energy to domestic and international markets.
The minister also pointed to Alberta’s submission to the federal Major Projects Office, arguing that the pipeline could play a role in strengthening Canada’s energy security and economic independence. He said the project would also demonstrate the country’s ability to move ahead with major infrastructure developments.
For Alberta, the proposed pipeline is being presented as an opportunity to support employment across the energy supply chain. Jean said construction and operation of the project could benefit workers in oil-producing areas as well as communities whose economies depend heavily on the sector.
He specifically highlighted communities ranging from Fort McMurray to the Peace region, saying stronger oil and gas activity could translate into increased employment opportunities and greater economic stability for workers and their families.
Alberta backs federal national-interest process
Jean also welcomed a notice published in the Canada Gazette that begins the process of potentially designating the proposed west coast pipeline as a project of national interest.
The Alberta government said it intends to continue discussions with Ottawa, industry representatives and Indigenous partners as work on the project progresses.
The minister thanked EPAC for publicly supporting the pipeline and said collaboration between governments, energy companies and Indigenous communities would be important to moving the proposal forward.
The latest development adds momentum to efforts to expand Canada’s west coast energy infrastructure, with Alberta positioning the proposed pipeline as a project that could strengthen the province’s oil industry while contributing to the country’s broader energy and economic security.
