Thunderstorms, Rain Likely in Parts of Punjab as Weather Turns Pleasant

Punjab

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Residents across Punjab experienced a welcome break from the intense summer heat as changing weather conditions brought cooler temperatures, strong winds and cloudy skies to several regions of the state. The Meteorological Department has forecast continued rain and thunderstorm activity in multiple districts over the next few days.

Weather officials reported a significant decline in daytime temperatures, with the state’s average maximum temperature falling below the seasonal norm. The cooler conditions were largely driven by cloud cover and gusty winds that swept through various districts during the past 24 hours.

The weather office has predicted scattered rainfall, lightning and winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour in districts including Amritsar, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Bathinda, Moga, Barnala, Mansa and Sri Muktsar Sahib.

While much of Punjab is expected to remain under the influence of unstable weather conditions, Chandigarh is likely to witness partly clear skies with occasional cloud cover.

The changing weather pattern is being linked to an active western disturbance and atmospheric circulation over northern India. Experts believe these systems will continue to influence weather conditions across Punjab until later this week.

Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution during thunderstorms, particularly in open fields and near trees, electric poles and temporary structures. The advisory comes after weather-related incidents were reported in some parts of the state during recent storms.

Despite the recent improvement in weather conditions, Punjab continues to record below-normal rainfall for June. Meteorological data indicates that several districts remain rain-deficient, although some areas have received above-average precipitation during the month.

Agriculture experts believe the forecasted showers could provide some relief to farmers and help improve soil moisture levels ahead of the upcoming crop season. However, they have also cautioned against potential damage from strong winds and localized heavy rainfall.

According to weather officials, the state is expected to witness intermittent rain, cloud cover and cooler conditions through June 26. No major rise in temperatures is anticipated during this period, offering residents a temporary respite from the summer heat.
