Calgary ( Rajeev Sharma) : A woman who was shot by a Calgary police officer during a confrontation on Deerfoot Trail Sunday afternoon has died in hospital, prompting an independent investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT). According to the Calgary Police Service, the woman had been evading police and driving dangerously across Calgary and surrounding areas for nearly 24 hours. Investigators say her actions included driving the wrong way on one-way streets, running red lights, and being involved in multiple collisions.
The incident came to a head at approximately 4:17 p.m. when officers successfully boxed in the vehicle on northbound Deerfoot Trail between Memorial Drive and 16 Avenue S.E.

Police said a confrontation occurred as officers attempted to arrest the driver. During the struggle, several officers deployed use-of-force options, and one officer discharged their service weapon. The woman sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital, where she later died. No police officers or members of the public were physically injured during the incident.
In a statement, Calgary Police said public safety remained the primary concern throughout the incident.

“Given the serious nature of this event and the discharge of a police firearm, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been notified and will conduct an independent investigation,” police stated. As required whenever a police officer discharges a firearm resulting in serious injury or death, ASIRT has assumed responsibility for investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased woman. Further details are expected as the independent investigation progresses. National Times Media Group will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as they become available.
