Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): In a move aimed at improving the efficiency of its immigration system, Canada has introduced a fresh set of refugee and asylum regulations that seek to accelerate case processing while addressing a growing backlog of applications. The reforms, implemented through Bill C-12, introduce new timelines for claimants and expand administrative powers available to immigration authorities.
One of the key changes requires individuals entering Canada through irregular border routes to submit asylum applications within a specified period after arrival. Officials say the measure is designed to ensure that protection claims are assessed promptly and to prevent lengthy delays that have burdened the system in recent years.
The updated framework also places greater emphasis on digital services, encouraging applicants to file claims online and submit complete documentation at the outset. Authorities believe this will reduce procedural bottlenecks and help officials process applications more efficiently.
In addition, immigration agencies have been granted broader authority to coordinate with other levels of government by sharing relevant information when necessary. The legislation also allows the federal government to review and, in certain circumstances, suspend or amend immigration-related documents such as visas, work permits and study permits.
Despite the tighter procedures, officials have stressed that humanitarian safeguards remain in place. Individuals facing potential risks in their country of origin may still be eligible for a pre-removal assessment process to ensure they are not returned to situations involving persecution, violence or threats to their safety.
The Canadian government maintains that the reforms are intended to create a more responsive and sustainable asylum system, balancing the country’s humanitarian responsibilities with the need for effective immigration management. Observers note that the changes could have a significant impact on future refugee claims and the overall pace of immigration processing across the country.
