Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): After days of soaring temperatures, several parts of Punjab are witnessing a shift in weather conditions, with forecasts indicating continued chances of rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across multiple districts. The India Meteorological Department has advised residents to remain cautious as gusty winds and lightning may accompany the changing weather pattern.
According to weather officials, districts in the Malwa and Doaba regions are likely to experience scattered showers along with winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph. While Chandigarh is expected to remain under partly cloudy skies, neighbouring areas could receive intermittent rainfall over the next few days.
The recent spell of storms has already impacted daily life in several cities. Strong winds and rain swept through parts of Punjab on Sunday night, bringing temporary relief from the intense heat but also causing isolated damage. Authorities have urged people to avoid venturing out during thunderstorms and to stay away from vulnerable structures and trees during high winds.
Even as clouds gather over the state, power consumption remains high due to persistent summer conditions. Electricity demand has stayed near seasonal peaks, with the state continuing to depend significantly on power sourced from the central grid. Energy officials are closely monitoring supply as some thermal generation units remain unavailable or operate below full capacity.
Rainfall statistics for June indicate that Punjab is still running below its seasonal average, despite a few districts recording excess precipitation. Meteorologists believe the current weather system could help narrow the deficit in some regions while also bringing a modest drop in daytime temperatures.
Forecasts suggest that rain and thunderstorm activity may continue until June 24 before weather conditions stabilise later in the week. Temperatures are expected to ease temporarily, offering much-needed respite to residents grappling with the summer heat.
