Chandigarh opens doors to 24×7 business operations at 179 establishments

Gurpreet Singh :- Chandigarh has taken a major step towards becoming a more accessible and service-oriented city, with the Administration granting permission to 179 commercial establishments to remain open 24 hours a day throughout the year. The move is expected to bring significant relief to residents who often struggled to find essential services late at night and had to travel to nearby areas such as Mohali for basic requirements.

The decision covers a wide range of businesses, including tea stalls, restaurants, grocery stores, petrol pumps, spa centres and pet shops. Officials believe the initiative will improve convenience for residents, especially those working night shifts, frequent travellers and emergency service users.

One of the biggest changes will be visible in Sector 8-B, where more than 30 shops in the inner market will now function round the clock. Similar permissions have also been extended to establishments in Sectors 15, 22, 32, 35, 36, 40, 44, 45, 46 and 47. In addition, several shops in village areas such as Khuda Lahora, Khuda Jassu and Burail are also expected to remain operational through the night.

Shopkeepers have welcomed the Administration’s decision, describing it as a practical step towards improving urban convenience. Traders said the move would benefit delivery workers, commuters and people requiring urgent supplies during late-night hours.

At the same time, the Labour Department has imposed a series of conditions for businesses opting to remain open 24×7. All establishments must be registered with the department and ensure that employees receive at least one weekly holiday. Strict provisions have also been introduced for women employees, including CCTV surveillance, proper lighting arrangements, separate locker facilities and safe transport during night shifts.

The Administration has clarified that bars, pubs and liquor vends will not be covered under the new policy. Authorities have also directed businesses to strictly follow overtime and labour regulations while operating beyond normal hours.
